Some couples are so prepared for getting divorced they’re already
ready to get back on the dating horse. However, people often wonder whether
or not it will interfere with their divorce in any way. Most people would
recommend holding off on dating until the divorce is finalized, particularly
if it’s likely to be a short divorce. However, for longer divorces,
some people might begin to feel lonely and restless. In those cases, there
are some precautions you should take if you’re still in the process
of divorcing.
Judges will rarely punish someone who begins dating once they have been
physically separated from their spouse. However, if your spouse’s
attorney can convince the court you were unfaithful to your spouse and
it led to the divorce, you may come out worse financially after the process is over.
If you decide to start dating, make sure you’re not still living
with your spouse. Likewise, keep your new dates from meeting your children
(if you have kids) until you’re serious about the new individual,
which could take a while to figure out. Your children are likely to be
emotionally fragile by the divorce proceeding, and meeting a new potential
parent might be too much for them to handle.
Additionally, keep from getting pregnant or impregnating someone else before
the divorce is final. If this happens, the event is likely to prolong
your case until the baby is born so the court can verify paternity and
determine custody and support requirements.
If you’re using the Internet to date, make sure you’re not
lying on any of your profiles. Your spouse’s attorney will be using
the Internet to look you up so he or she can find information to use against
you during the divorce proceeding. If an attorney catches you in a lie,
this is likely to backfire on you later in court.
It’s okay to attend events on your own and socialize. Getting divorced
can feel lonely and isolating. Use friends and family as a support network
if you need someone in your life who can be there for you emotionally
and socially without needing to involve a person who may be looking for
something long-term you’re not ready to give yet.
